Calgary Wild FC Extends Unbeaten Streak to Six in Historic Scoreless Draw with AFC Toronto

Draw marks first time AFC Toronto was not able to defeat Alberta’s only women’s professional sports team

TORONTO — Calgary Wild FC extended its unbeaten streak to six matches Sunday, earning a hard-fought 0-0 draw against AFC Toronto.

It was the first time Toronto has not been able to defeat the Wild in the Northern Super League’s two-year history.

“That’s a great accomplishment for us. It is a whole team effort,” said Taylor Otto, who was one of five players to arrive to the squad over the last month. “Defensively we are a lot more structured. Obviously, we would have loved to get three points, but we are headed in the right direction for sure.”

The result marks another important moment in Calgary Wild FC’s second season and continues the team’s strong run of form as the club remains unbeaten in its last six matches.

“For us there has been a lot of little changes, so I think the staff has done a great job adding a little more structure and credit to the girls coming in with a great attitude after a tough start to the season,” added Otto. “We found a way to turn it around. For us it is the next game ahead of us every time.”

Sarah Keilty-Dilling made her second consecutive start for Calgary Wild FC, remaining unbeaten. One of the first signings in Calgary Wild FC history, the Calgary-born Keilty-Dilling earned her first start last weekend and helped the Wild battle to a 2-2 draw. She followed that performance with another strong outing as Calgary secured a clean sheet against AFC Toronto.

“The first half we didn’t play how we expected. Once we addressed things at half-time, the momentum started to shift and we had more control. Getting a point here is amazing for us,” said Kory Babington, assistant coach, Calgary Wild FC. “Things are moving in the right direction. I think one of the things is the vibe amongst the squad is outstanding. Everything seems to be heading in the right direction.”

The match was evenly contested, with both teams sharing 50 per cent possession. AFC Toronto generated 22 shots, including five on target, while Calgary created 10 shots and put four on goal. The Wild’s defensive effort and determination throughout the match helped secure the historic result.

“You are not going to dominate all games,” added Babington. “The first half was heavily in Toronto’s favour. We haven’t had trouble scoring of late until today. I wish we had one up our sleeve to take the three points back to Calgary.”

The Wild’s current streak began with a 4-0 victory over Club Soccer Mont-Royal Outremont in the Women’s Canadian Championship. Calgary then earned a 3-2 road win over Vancouver Rise FC before returning home to defeat league-leading Ottawa Rapid FC 4-3 in a thrilling contest. They earned back-to-back 2-2 draws with Montreal Roses two weeks ago, and Vancouver Rise FC last week.

Calgary Wild FC will now return home for its next match, welcoming Halifax Tides FC for the club’s Active Girls Match on Friday, September 12 at 12 p.m.
