Calgary Wild FC Cruises into W Canadian Championship Semifinal with Dominant Win

Calgary club break through with 4-0 victory over Club Soccer Mont-Royal Outremont

CALGARY — Calgary Wild FC delivered its most complete performance of the season Wednesday night, booking its place in the semifinals of the inaugural W Canadian Championship with a commanding 4-0 victory over Club Soccer Mont-Royal Outremont at ATCO Field.

With a berth in the competition’s final four on the line, the Wild controlled the match from start to finish, attacking relentlessly while keeping a clean sheet behind goalkeeper Katelin Talbert.

“The result was pleasing,” said assistant coach Kory Babington, who guided the club with head coach Leah Blayney away for personal reasons. “It’s no secret we’ve had a tough season, so going into a cup competition, which is exciting and has rewards at the end, and to score some good goals there was pleasing for the players.”

Hometown girl, Mya Jones, led the offensive charge with two goals, opening the scoring in the 31st minute before heading home a perfectly placed cross from former University of Memphis teammate and fellow Calgarian, Grace Stordy, just one minute into the second half. Taylor Otto, who joined the club in the Wild Rose province one week ago, added her first goal in a Calgary Wild FC jersey before Serita Thurton capped the scoring to send the Stampede City side into the semifinals.

“Today I just needed to shoot the ball,” said Jones. “We had the ball a little bit more and I just kept telling myself I’m going to shoot.

“The last one was just the perfect ball from Stordy, so I just had to get my head on it.”

The victory sends Calgary into a semifinal showdown with Ottawa Rapid FC.

“To get some rhythm with the new signings, it was great to give them more minutes and continue to build a bit of team chemistry,” added Coach Babington.

Jones acknowledged the performance was an important step forward for a team searching for momentum in a season where they have gone winless so far in the Northern Super League.

“Yeah, it just feels really good to get that first win,” said Jones. “I think it’s kind of just something we need to build off from here and build into the season continuing for the rest of the year.

“It just felt really good to have that chemistry on the field with the girls.”

The clean sheet capped a dominant all-around performance as Calgary controlled possession, created chances throughout the 90 minutes and limited Mont-Royal Outremont’s opportunities.

“For us, it’s always a 90-minute performance,” Jones said. “We all know the potential in this group, and it showed tonight that we’re capable of putting the ball in the back of the net.”

The W Canadian Championship is Canada Soccer’s new women’s domestic knockout competition featuring all six Northern Super League clubs and two Premier Soccer League Canada teams. The single-elimination tournament provides a pathway to the 2027 Concacaf W Champions Cup.

Calgary Wild FC now turns its attention back to Northern Super League play when it visits Vancouver Rise FC on Saturday at 5 p.m. MT, carrying valuable momentum from its first victory of the season.
