Calgary Wild FC Unbeaten Streak Ends at Six with 3-1 Loss to Ottawa Rapid FC

OTTAWA — Calgary Wild FC’s six-match unbeaten streak came to an end Sunday night as the Wild fell 3-1 to Ottawa Rapid FC under the lights in Canada’s capital city.

Ottawa opened the scoring just four minutes into the match when Ngozi Sonia Okobi-Okeoghene found the back of the net past Calgary goalkeeper Sarah Keilty-Dilling.

The hosts doubled their advantage in the 25th minute when Johanne Fridlund made it 2-0 heading into halftime.

Calgary came out with renewed urgency in the second half, fighting their way back into the match.

“Strategically we were more disciplined in the second half. We were creating chances towards the end of the game. The momentum we had was excellent. If we would have told these girls 15 weeks ago the possession would be so close when you are playing Ottawa today – one of the best teams in the league with the ball – you would be pleased,” said Leah Blayney, head coach, Calgary Wild FC, whose mother was in the stands visiting from Australia.

“Our substitutions were all attacking ones. We are substituting because we want to win the game. We are super pleased with that as an outcome of the game.”

One of the subs was Frederique St-Jean who made an immediate impact.

The recent recruit to Calgary cut Ottawa’s lead in half in the 77th minute, giving the Wild a late opportunity to find an equalizer.

“We just need to start strong from the start because that’s what we did last week, and we got the result we wanted,” said St-Jean. “We had great fan support here. I could hear my dad cheering all game which was awesome.”

Ottawa, however, responded quickly, with Okobi-Okeoghene scoring her second of the night to restore the two-goal advantage and secure the 3-1 victory.

Ottawa finished the night with 18 shots, including eight on target, while Calgary registered nine shots and two on target. The Wild held 46 per cent possession compared to Ottawa’s 54 per cent.

Calgary will now return to the Stampede City for their final home match of the season, September 27, when they host Vancouver Rise FC at McMahon Stadium (2 p.m. MTN).
