Calgary Wild FC Extends Unbeaten Run to Four Games with 2-2 Draw Against Montreal Roses FC

MONTREAL—Calgary Wild FC continued its impressive run on Sunday, battling Montreal Roses FC to a 2-2 draw at Stade Boréale to extend its unbeaten streak to four matches.

The result continues a remarkable transformation for Alberta’s only professional women’s sports team, which has been playing with greater confidence, pace and poise while integrating new faces into the lineup.

“It was a hard-fought affair in difficult conditions with the weather. It was pleasing to walk away with one point,” said Calgary Wild FC assistant coach Kory Babington.

Taegan Stewart opened the scoring for Calgary in the 36th minute, converting a penalty kick for the second consecutive match to give the Wild a 1-0 lead.

Montreal responded in first-half stoppage time when Marie-Yasmine Alidou found the equalizer, sending the teams into halftime level at 1-1.

“We should have gone to halftime with a 1-0 lead, but a lapse in concentration brought it back to parity at the break,” added Babington.

The Roses took their first lead of the afternoon in the 50th minute when Elyse Bennett put her first of the afternoon behind the Calgary goalkeeper, but the Wild FC once again showed its resilience.

Jorian Baucom, who has been in excellent form for the Wild FC recently, delivered the equalizer in the 70th minute to pull Calgary level at 2-2.

“To be able to stay focused on our game plan and execute exactly what we’ve been training on throughout the week was very present today,” said Baucom. “Of course, there’s always room for improvement on both ends of the pitch, but we’re getting better each week as a group. It was also awesome to get on the scoresheet again and continuing to build my confidence on the pitch.”

The Wild continued to push for a winner late in the match, creating several dangerous opportunities, but could not get the go-ahead goal.

“In the second half, I thought we did better, but again another defensive lapse cost us. To get an equalizer from Jorian, who has been in excellent form lately, is pleasing,” said Babington. “We finished the game quite well, had some good chances and a disallowed goal. All in all, a point away from home is pleasing, but in some ways, we probably could have taken all three points. The great thing about today is the character the girls showed. We kept fighting to the end and got a well-deserved point.”

The draw follows three straight victories for Calgary, beginning with a 4-0 win over Club Soccer Mont-Royal Outremont in the W Canadian Championship. The Wild followed that performance with a 3-2 road victory over Vancouver Rise FC before returning home to defeat the league-leading Ottawa Rapid FC in a thrilling 4-3 contest.

“I think teams are starting to rethink about Calgary Wild when it’s time to play against us and I love it,” added Baucom.

Calgary will look to continue their unbeaten run when they travel to the west coast, August 29, for a match up against the Vancouver Rise FC.
